I wish I could slap people through the internet shirt

or Drag Race Down Under: this is not representing Aotearoa drag at all. As much as I love I wish I could slap people through the internet shirt and Elektra and what they have done for nz drag Aotearoa has a huge scene for POC as well as drag king and bio queens and kings. Samoan, Tongan (like Brita), Fijian, Cook Island, Chinese, Korean etc. Drag Race Down Under was never going to have kiwi queens (maybe one or two) when production was going to be in Sydney but due to the covid change it was filmed in Auckland but it’s giving more platform for the established Aussie queens then caring about the actual drag scenes It’s also a season where the queens where picked, not auditionedI think it’s difficult to judge the diversity on the first season of a show like Drag Race as usually they cast some of the most well known queens for it and there are only 12 places on the show. Drag Race UK only had two POC in the first season but in the second they had three. Granted it’s not a huge increase but compared to the Oceania the UK isn’t very diverse. If the show goes for another few seasons and they still aren’t casting queen from more Pacific countries like Tonga and Fiji, at that point I think it’s a problem. You cant base it off the other first seasons of drag race where theres also been hardly any representation. It’s problematic. They could easily cast a whole season of Black and NBPOC queens, they exist. White queens aren’t the standard and they aren’t more talented, regardless of clout. It’s racist to have a white majority and everyone else has to be the token minority.

Best I wish I could slap people through the internet shirt

It’s not racist to have a white majority if the population is majority white. That’s just I wish I could slap people through the internet shirt  . Yes, if most shows wanted to, they could cast an entirely POC cast. However, I think the shows should simply cast the queen’s that will make it the most interesting season no matter their race, body type, age or anything else you can think of. That’s the fairest way to cast. Thanks for this essay! I did not expect to read through the whole thing when I started, but it was written in a way that made it very compelling and easy for my low attention span brain lol. So kudos for that!I fully agree with your thesis. My critique, though, would be that you can find just as many or more examples of the show uplifting queens of colour as you can of it showing favouritism towards white Queens. We shouldn’t forget that this is one of the most diverse franchises ever. Now, I don’t think that’s an excuse for them not doing better, and all the examples of stereotyping are valid and real – I just think that pulling out so many varied examples makes the whole thing pretty muddy. It would actually be cool if this was a series where all the different types of representation are broken down and examined (understanding that you can’t clearly separate representation because of intersectionality). There’s just so much to analyze and discuss.
