Ever since I was little, the Ayasofya was a kind of stand-in for all things exotic and Turkish. ABeware i am a grumpy old lady shirt of the odd dialect, which sounds like the fluid Greek I heard old folks use in Greece’s eastern islands (in spoken Greek, we still call it Ayásofyá like the Turks do, not Hagia Sophia… which sounds German), and the picture-book retellings of a classy and decidedly “not ours!” city studded with minarets, solidified the idea. When I learned that winsome red house used to be a church, then a mosque, and now a museum, I used to wonder, “why don’t they make it back into a church or a mosque? If it remains a museum another 500 years, people will forget what made it interesting in the first place, and won’t that be a pity?” While I’m cynical enough not to take Erdogan’s turning it into a mosque seriously, I can’t say I am able to work up any discomfort over it. I would not have supported the secularization of Turkey’s largest mosque in 1934 (which, as you will see even ardent secularists here admit, was done by a regime that “didn’t give people a choice” in the matter). As our own Patriarch Bartholomew recently said on an unrelated issue, even a status quo of several centuries is not sufficient to regularize a mistake.
