On theDiplo duck us Classic shirt of Khans, the Nika riots I mentioned are a decent illustration of what I’m getting at: I first learned them from some popular Greek histories which were glib on the “violent rioters”, and waxed romantic about Justinian’s defiant stand against the Mob. And I believed them (and after that, I wanted to believe them) before slowly coming to grips with how the sausage is made. Which parallels what I see the nationalist narrative in Turkish countries throw up: a smoothed over version of history, in which a series of very dubious “conquerors” are set up as the “Central Asian roots”.
