It is both historically and culturally correct. It is only politically incorrect to some people for they loathe any connection with China. So yes, the phrase “Lunar New Year” is as dumbfounding as “Freedom Fries”. Languages and traditions are always flexible and changing. If we keep acting dumb, then being dumb would be the new norm. I have no doubt that, maybe given a few years, the official English name for the Chinese New Year could be changed into Lunar New Year, even when that phrase is like 10% more precise than “Calendar New Year”. I lost my Weibo account years ago. I don’t know how much Liu was criticized for this. Maybe they are overreacting. But let’s not pretend the phrase “Lunar New Year” is not in itself a product of ridiculous PC allergy at the expense of historical and cultural reality.
