I work with teens and have found that 9 out of 10 times they WANT to do well, they ENJOY being handed new tasks, and they find new responsibilities EXCITING. They want to impress you, step up, and prove that they’re not just a kid themselves (even if they still are, all things considered). 13 years old is definitely old enough to watch a 2 month old. Does he have a phone? Can he text/call someone to ask questions if he gets nervous or worried? As long as he has a support system that he can rely on and trust, he’s got this. As a mother and manager, teen boys today are some of the hardest working and most respectful and dependable people I have on my team. I will take a chance on them and go to bat for them any day. I definitely micromanage the situation when she’s head chef, but when I loosen the reigns and let her go, she’s got it. It’s my own fear that sometimes make me act so rigid and controlling. Kids (and people) will never learn if you don’t let it happen.
