I take umbridge with a lot of what is being said here. I was in gifted from 2nd grade through graduation. I am still friends with a lot of the other people who were in these programs. Most of them are lovely Sloths Hamburger Novelty Hamburger Shirt, kind, empathetic people. They are high achieving yes, but not at the expense of others or out of fear of not being the smartest. To me, this situation is more about parenting and the school system permitting (perhaps even encouraging) narcissistic behavior in this young man while he was growing up.
