I took a test at the start of grade 4, after skipping two grades. It was my first week at a new school. I’d gotten every answer correct, but a dozen other children were chosen (allegedly according to the scores of that test) to move to the advanced class. That selfassuredness I’d developed instantly disappeared. I stopped answering questions in class. I stopped doing homework. The entire trajectory of my life was changed, and not for the better. We’ve got to stop tying the value of a child to the score on a test.
