Good points, I think it is tough to evaluate myself on your questions objectively but in the latest session that brought up this post one of my players seemed to be passive aggressively accusing me of railroading with under his breath comments. It was a little true, I ensured that the city gate they tried to sneak out of was festooned with guards, when asked how the guards were alerted so quickly I handwaved by saying, "they have magic too" and since the captain of the guard was a magic user that presumably had some kind of sending spell he could use to marshall his guards I thought this was sufficient (a lot more details i am omitting for brevity). The player appeared to accept my answer at the table but I was unsure so I asked him after the game if he had any issues with that encounter and he said no. I hope its true and that he would tell me if he thought it was unfair and didnt want me to do that again... so I was inspired to write this post.
