My mother came to the USA from Czechoslovakia the day after Hitler invaded. She was less than a year old. They spent a lot of time working to make money to send back to their relatives to get them to the US. The stories were sad. There was only one story about a teacher at school who tried to help her get ahead due to her good grades, but this type of outreach was a rarity. I once gave her the book Angela’s Ashes, and she had to stop reading it because it was exactly like her childhood in steel town Pittsburgh in the 1940s.
