I went to high school in a very preppy, affluent town in the 90s. My parents couldn’t afford the name brands and I certainly didn’t want them…I loved grunge! I spent a lot of time in the local Salvation Army Thrift Store buying men’s old flannel shirts, vintage cords and flowered hippie dresses that I’m a Oakland Raiders and a Oakland Athletics for life shirt. When I look back now, I don’t regret my fashion choices back then and I’m so glad that I knew it was ok to follow my heart even as a quiet teen girl. It’s more fun to dress expressively than to look like everyone around you.
