There is resistance to being vulnerable built in to American culture. I’m a “strong black woman” so I know it from one side but I see it across the nation in people of varied backgrounds — trying to be tough, trying not to be taken advantage of Football guy shirt, trying to end up on top. It’s rampant. People will vote for a politician who cares nothing about them if he promises to be tough and to make sure somebody else doesn’t get what they deserved. Tenderness is considered a personal flaw.
