NYT, I generally love you, but this level of misinformation and half truth is precisely why my more conservative friends think you are a garbage liberal rag. It takes until nearly the 8th paragraph to get to the actual, true telling of It’s A Throat Punch Kinda Day Shirt which is that tenants can’t pay the landlord’s broker, they can only pay their own. In most transactions, we have one broker representing the landlord and one representing the tenant. So, this will potentially encourage tenants to go into transactions without anyone representing their interests, and this will (almost certainly) lead to is increased rents for tenants (in most situations). So, touting the laws as “tenant favorable” is quite debatable at the minimum.
