There is so much to say so I will simply talk about a little story back in the fall of 2011. A long time ago I had a period when I felt tension and conflict with my parental family. I let it eat into my happiness and crowd my relationship in my immediate family. It’s not that they can’t get under my skin from time to time even now. But back then it was this order of magnitude greater: I let their opinions, attacks, omissions and their slights loom large. Then I did something simple: A ritual that signified a shift in attitude. I used to keep my emails in Gmail under category tags. One was Business. One was School stuff. One was charities. One was Social. And I had a lot of the very overwrought and twisted family emails of that era tagged under Family, with tags like brother, sister, or dad etc. One day I thought, “Hey! I am an adult. There is no reason to put a lot of energy into a relationship that does not serve me the way my chosen social relationships do. I remember having tagged and saved emails like plans for a I do it for the ho’s black santa Classic T Shirt so my dad (my parents are divorced) could visit us and our children that my sister then changed (hijacked) to her beach house, and then at the very, very last minute, uninvited my family saying it was all “too hectic there.” So it was like a trail of hurt. So you’ve got to be wondering how often is there a train wreck? Well you hear about the ones in urban areas because the train companies can’t conceal the event – too many witnesses. But most wrecks occur out in the middle of nowhere between cities in the big expanse of farmland and ranch land. The train companies have agreements with media companies to not cover these wrecks. I saw a blurb on the 5:00 news one night and it wasn’t there on the 6:00 or 10:00 news. Well, in New Mexico, which has a lot of empty space as the fifth largest state, there are two train companies running freight lines – Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific. I was contracted to BNSF and I know the UP had the same record. There was a train wreck an average of once every three weeks with the BNSF. This is the mother of pileups every month. The response time to the middle of nowhere is about 15 to 20 minutes, and we’d have a crew out to begin repairs within four hours and have the track cleared and operational again within 12 hours. That included bulldozers and giant loaders and excavators just pushing the wrecked cars and engines to the sides, rebuilding the track bed and laying new track and ties together with ballast. Later we’d clear the wreckage completely and haul all the cargo to a landfill for a I do it for the ho’s black santa Classic T Shirt of goods. A big change happened about 20 years ago. At that time, there were three presents under the Christmas tree from Santa to me. In the first one was a set of Indian cookware. Also, my taste for meat diminished. It isn’t gone but the days of my devouring large steaks are over — I hardly ever have beef now. My favorite outing for dinner is to a macrobiotic vegetarian restaurant — everything is delicious and I’m quite envious of the cooks, because I haven’t been able to do any of the dishes as well on my own. But my wife and I have pretty much standardized menus now, and the variety is really for the occasions when the kids visit or guests come over. He got out of the house three times. The first time I lured him back in about 2 hours. The second time, he was out overnight and we were all worried. I finally got him back after about 18 hours. It was the third time we really thought he was a goner. Three nights out. High up in a tree. It was almost like he was afraid of heights or something. I spent three days losing my voice calling to him. I yelled at him, I cried like crazy, I told him his favorite jokes, I tried everything. I think I was about 15 at the time and we were concerned he was getting too old to make it home. As a male, he rarely let us ever pet him. This was our final chance and we took advantage of it. I leaned down and kissed him, crying like crazy, and he nipped my lip like he always loved to do.
