1972, my baby sister is 6 yrs old and I had just turned 12. Our folks owned a 17,000 square foot grocery store and, as usual on Christmas eve, the crap hit the fan. A full crew of our employees and local plumbers were working on repairs while my two little sisters and I were using wet vacuums with Barbara using a solo cup to scoop up water to remove backed up water. Oh yeah, it’s Christmas morning about 01:00 and this is in Northeast Montana. The high that night was Negative 15F. As we are dumping the water from the Wet Vacs off the back loading dock. Almost instantly, the water was already freezing, making an ‘ice skating rink’ which ended up 2 feet thick and 60 yards across (think baby ice hockey rink). Our store was in the landing pattern for an Air Force B-52 nuclear bomber wing. I saw a flight of Buffs (B-52s) turning into the landing pattern at about 01:00 or later. My sister looked up as i pointed out the lights, “Barbara, there goes Santa. He could not stop for our toys because we weren’t in bed asleep.

Summer is most often, quite beautiful with long evenings, gorgeous sunsets and very comfortable temperatures, fall gives us the most beautiful golden foliage to view, winter, although very cold, blesses us with scenes one would expect to see on a Christmas card. There are many opportunities to participate in winter sports, and spring. Spring brings a title of the horticultural side of the city. There a number of music and theatre festivals (intended to give something back to the community) which begin to show up Spring weekends. These occur from Spring right through to Fall. Edmontonians have a reputation for supporting publicly sponsored events. We host a number of international sporting events. This gives us many opportunities to volunteer our time to help. We have professional football and hockey teams.

Maybe that’s why I just love Santa, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, Christmas decor, Christmas Trees and Christmas MUSIC! Cause we never really had it…though my parents always had Xmas music on as we lit Hanukkah candles and opened Hanukkah presents. Haha. We never had stockings, or left cookies out for Santa, cause he passed over our house. Blah and ugh. Yea, as kids we were a little resentful of that. sighs. I remember once as a little kid my mom took me to the mall to get my pic with Santa and when he asked me (this little blonde hair blue eyed girl) what I wanted for Xmas I looked at him and I started crying. I said I am Jewish… think I yelled at him…you don’t ever come to my house. And, he looked at me like so confused and lost…the $10 dollar an hour Santa was at a loss for words, not sure what to say to me…..I held on to his arm and I begged him to come to our house just this one time. My mom had to pull me away. He seemed relieved however, he did promise me he would come. And that year we left cookies out for him (in the shape of Jewish stars and Dreidels) and carrots on the lawn for the Mess with my daughter and from a place you will not see will come a sound you will not hear t shirt. And what do you know, he actually did come to my house…. I will say I was so so happy. sighs oh the joys of being a child.
