Food – it seems that fast food chains, of one kind or another are taking over the American culinary landscape. Sure, you have McDonalds and Burger King – in fact they are a stone’s throw from on another in my German town. There’s even Dunkin Donuts and Kentucky Fried Chicken in the Wiesbaden train station. However, it seems that in many smaller to medium sized towns in the heart of the US – fast food chains are it. Of course, on the coasts you can get some great dining experiences – not German, but wonderful just the same. So, say goodbye to schnitzel for the most part and I’ve been called a lot of names in my lifetime but daddy is my favorite t shirt say hello to the hamburger…Oh, wine? You pay 5 Euros for a decent Riesling, expect to pay $20 for the same bottle in the US – if it is imported.

Most families in the West have a Christmas tradition. It may or may not include the character of “Santa Claus”. A person dresses up in a red suit and asks all the children what they would like for Christmas. Then the parents (one of which was actually the Santa Claus) makes a list and goes shopping for everything the children requested. One year on my list I asked for ice skates. Sonia Henie was a famous ice skating star and that’s who I wanted to be when I grew up. We were dirt poor and lived in a rural area. Yet somehow on Christmas morning there were ice skates! They were actually hockey skates not figure skates – I guess I forgot to make that clear to Santa Claus. But they were ice skates. And even on a frozen cow pond I was almost as good as Sonia Henie. Australia, like the USA is a big place and sometimes when it comes to branding, there are export brands which aren’t seen on a title market. I guess one of the things which may seem odd, is that the typical Australian is not unlike the typical mid westerner.

As part of the solstice celebrations, the pagan cultures decorated their homes with greens in anticipation of the spring to come. The tradition was incorporated into the Christian faith in Germany during the 1500’s. They decorated trees in their homes with sweets, lights, and toys. The giving of gifts at Christmas dates back to the time of Christ’s birth. The relevance of the gift giving tradition on Christmas day is reminiscent and a representation of the tributes that three Magi – who symbolise, according to Christian tradition – gave to the infant Jesus in the manger. The Magi, (there wise men), gave Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh, when they understood that the baby they were looking at was both human and the son of God. This relevance of the exchanging of a gift to each other at Christmas time was too symbolise and celebrate the I’ve been called a lot of names in my lifetime but daddy is my favorite t shirt mentioned on Christmas Day. While an ordinary day is wide and varied, it varies according to family and individual culture, where one lives and their occupation, most Aussies officially work an 38 hour week and spend the weekend doing various activities, not totally dissimilar to typical lives of an American. Not specifically someone from the Mid West. But how does one define ordinary mid west folk? There’s such a high range of cultural diversity in the Mid West of the USA. What one finds odd will vary according to what part of the Midwest a person came from, what a person preconceives Australian lifestyle to be and what part of Australia said person is experiencing and comparing their historical life to but odd can mean different things too, It may seem odd that some Australians lifestyle is remarkably similar to some American lifestyles. This might seem really odd and unexpected. We have obesity, couch culture, fast food, rap music, smart phone culture, mental health issues and a I’ve been called a lot of names in my lifetime but daddy is my favorite t shirt of technological convenience. We even have homeless people and racial segregation.

Christmas often includes turkey or ham, but there’s not the same level of universality. It’s more common to branch out to other meats for Christmas dinner, including prime rib, leg of I’ve been called a lot of names in my lifetime but daddy is my favorite t shirt, lamb chops, etc. (all those examples are from personal experience). Likewise for dessert, pumpkin pie is a little less common for Christmas, though rum cakes are a little more common. There’s another difference in that Thanksgiving is so focused on Thanksgiving dinner, so Thanksgiving dinner tends to be more involved than Christmas dinner, and there aren’t really other traditional Thanksgiving foods outside of that context. But Christmas gets the whole ‘season’ treatment, so there’s more than just the dinner itself. There are a lot of Christmas parties, so appetizers, snacks, and hors d’oeuvres get a more thorough treatment. Christmas also gets a lot of sweets, from cookies to pumpkin rolls to gingerbread, etc. Eggnog is also typically associated with Christmas (though people who actually like eggnog seem to be in the minority). And of course, in recent years, there’s been pumpkin spice everything.
